Care For Your Smile With Better Brushing Habits

Whether you are a pro at oral hygiene who takes care to brush and floss every day or you have a more relaxed approach to your oral health, there are always going to be things that everyone can do to improve their hygiene habits. Frayed Bristles Don’t Help

If the bristles of your toothbrush are frayed, broken, or flattened, they won’t be able to clean your teeth as well as they should. Plus, the American Dental Association (ADA) recommends that you start using a new toothbrush every three or four months, so, if your brush’s bristles are looking unkempt, it’s probably time for a switch.

Timing Is Important

Speaking of timing, it is important that you brush your teeth for a full two minutes every time (which, ideally, is at least twice a day). Two minutes is the perfect amount of time to make sure you are thoroughly cleaning all of the nooks and crannies in your teeth in order to prevent cavities and tooth decay. If you have trouble knowing if you’ve brushed long enough, you can set a timer on your phone or look for an electric toothbrush with a two-minute setting. You can also try putting on your favorite song and watching for the two-minute mark!

Don’t Pressure Yourself

When you are brushing, make sure that you’re being kind to your teeth and gums by not applying excessive pressure. Even though it may seem like it would be helpful in the removal of food and plaque, brushing too hard or using a brush with hard, firm bristles can actually damage your gums and wear down your enamel over time. A light amount of pressure and softer bristles get the job done with fewer risks, and, of course, if you are experiencing pain while brushing or flossing, you should always make an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible.

Sometimes It’s Better to Wait

It may seem like a good idea to brush your teeth right after you eat or drink, but, if you’ve tried this, you may have noticed little bits of food left shoved in cracks, or that your tongue is still stained from your drink even after brushing. It is actually better to wait an hour after eating or drinking to brush your teeth to allow things to settle. While you’re waiting, rinsing your mouth with and drinking water are good ideas.

Brush Storage Matters

To prevent the growth of bacteria, it is important to keep your toothbrush stored in a clean, dry environment, like an upright toothbrush holder, so that the bristles can air dry. If left upside down, in a travel bristle protector, or in a puddle of water on the bathroom counter, germs will flourish on your toothbrush.
