Ice: 3 Times It’s Bad For Your Teeth

We cannot argue with you about ice. Yes, it seems like a wonderful snack. It’s cold and refreshing. It’s made of water, so it’s hydrating. It’s also free of calories, so it won’t lead to weight gain! However, there are some reasons that it’s not a very good idea as a snack because it can damage your oral health. We encourage you to think through a few times ice can prove hazardous, so you understand it poses a true threat!

#1: It Encourages Bruxism

Did you know that when you snack a lot, you end up contributing to bruxism? Maybe you already have it and you’re making it worse. Maybe it’s not yet effecting you but that repetitive chewing motion throughout the day might lead to bruxing. Your best bet? Lay off the snacking, especially the crunchy, hard stuff that really make you use your jaws. Note: This can make TMJ disorder worse, too!

#2: It Can Crack Your Tooth

Ice is hard. Even if you’re careful or you’re not eating cubes but are reaching for the crushed version instead, you may still be innocently chomping away only to end up with a crack. This is not good for your oral health! A crack will require a restoration like a crown but may also lead to a root canal treatment if it’s serious enough to let bacteria in.

#3: It Can Wear Down Enamel

The more you crunch and crunch away on that ice, the more likely it is you’re doing a disservice to your oral health by stripping your enamel away. This outer layer of your teeth is essential because it protects them! It’s a good idea to find a softer snack.
