#1: That You Have A Timer
Before you place your toothbrush into your mouth as you begin your dental hygiene session, you might want to check to be sure you have a timer on hand. Oh, and you should really also set it to two minutes (or flip that two-minute sand timer), so you are sure that from start to finish, you’re on track with getting just the right amount of brushing in to help you prevent issues like cavities and stains! Remember: Following the little particulars is what helps you develop excellent habits that protect your oral health.
#2: That You’ve Used A Pea-Size Dollop Of Toothpaste
We’ll assume that you’re using fluoridated toothpaste, as we suggest for all of our patients all the time! With that said, we remind you that you should stop and check as you prepare to brush to ensure you’re only using about a pea-size blob of toothpaste. Any less and you’re missing out on some of that cleansing power. Too much more and you’re overdoing it (and it’s not going to benefit your smile).
#3: That Your Brush Isn’t Old
If you get in the habit of taking a quick look at your toothbrush before you use it, you’ll know whether it’s going to get the job done! While you can write down (or remember) the date you began using it and remember to replace that toothbrush every three to four months, it’s still a good idea to keep an eye on the bristles. If they wear out more quickly than that three-to-four-month timeframe, it’s time to start fresh earlier (and you might want to mention this to us during your next checkup because it might mean you’re brushing too hard).
