#1: Facial Protection
Surprise! April is National Facial Protection Month. Yes, this might sound a bit confusing but it is quite simple. Backed by dentists, oral surgeons, and all those in the dental health field, this day brings recognition to the fact that your mouth (and surrounding structures) are vulnerable to injury on a daily basis. For instance, joining team sports (especially high-impact ones) can increase the chance of an injury. What should you take away from this? We suggest you wear a sports mouthguard when you are extremely active to protect your face and oral health. And, of course, never leave your helmet behind if you’re doing something that requires it (such as riding your bike).
#2: Stress
April is also known as Stress Awareness Month. If you haven’t thought too much about the connection to be made between your oral health and stress, we encourage you to do so. Speak with us or your general practitioner if you think you require help handling stress. For now, let’s explore a couple ways stress can harm your smile:
- Stress may contribute to the development or aggravation of TMJ disorder (jaw joint problems)
- Stress and anxiety may also contribute to or aggravate bruxism disorder (when you clench or grind your jaws involuntarily)
