If you are suffering from chronic jaw pain, or if you have been diagnosed with TMJ Disorder (TMD), your mind may be in a whirl. What exactly is TMJ? Why are you struggling with this condition? Most importantly, is there anything you can do? Although TMD can have a significant impact on your health and quality of life, there is hope. Proper treatment can relieve your symptoms, restore your dental function, and protect your oral health. Of course, the more you know about your condition, the more effective your treatment will be.
What Causes Jaw Pain?
TMJ Disorder will typically arise in one of two ways. First, the complex system of ligaments and muscles surrounding your temporomandibular joints could become inflamed. Second, one or both of the inner discs could slip out of place. These discs cushion your joints during movement. Therefore, when they are not in place, they can cause severe discomfort. You are at a higher risk for jaw pain if you suffer from bruxism. Chronic grinding and clinching places extra strain on your joints.
Will TMD Compromise My Overall Health?
Yes. Although TMJ Disorder is not typically considered a life threatening condition, it can certainly take a toll on your physical wellness. In many cases, it will cause chronic facial discomfort. Often, the pain can radiate into your neck and shoulders. However, in severe cases, TMD can lead to facial swelling, nerve damage, and severe jaw stiffness. If you have an unusually grave case of TMD, you may struggle with reduced jaw movement. In turn, this can restrict your ability to eat certain foods, and you could even suffer from malnutrition.
Do I Need Surgery?
Although surgery is one treatment option for TMJ Disorder, it is the least common. Typically, surgery is reserved for patients with the most severe cases, such as those with nerve damage or the inability to eat properly. In most cases, we will treat your TMD with a custom-crafted mouth guard. This device, which you will usually wear only at night, will realign your jaw. It will reduce the pressure on your joints, allowing inflammation and jaw pain to subside. Other treatments, such as anti-inflammatory medications, physical therapy, and temporary changes to your diet, can also help to reduce your symptoms.
