The Dangers of Damaged Teeth
When a tooth is chipped, even if the chip appears minor at most, this could still expose the inner layers of dentin to bacteria, a complication linked to the onset of tooth decay and even dental infection. To avoid these complications, we recommend a visit for a repair. If you chip a tooth, rinse with warm water, gather up any pieces of the tooth, and contact our office. In route, you can stem bleeding with cloth or gauze, and use a cold compress or ice pack to reduce facial swelling. You can also take an over-the-counter pain reliever to ease discomfort.
The Bonding Treatment Process
To start, we will remove any decay present and then carefully clean the tooth. We may also etch the surfaces we apply the bonding material to. The material itself is known as composite resin, a blend of glass and acrylic that is free of any metal. We shade the material to better blend with the tooth and improve smile esthetics. After applying the material to the tooth, we shape and mold the tooth as the composite resin cures under a special light. Finally, we polish the tooth to ensure a more attractive appearance.
Along with repairing minor chips and cracks, we can also lengthen worn-down teeth, which could occur if someone grinds their teeth. We also close gaps between the teeth, reshape malformed teeth, and even mask permanent discoloration, the kind that may not respond to traditional teeth whitening treatment options.
Contouring Your Smile
We also have another esthetic treatment that corrects issues with a tooth’s shape in just one visit. In fact, we may perform dental contouring in the same visit as your bonding procedure. Contouring involves carefully sanding and buffing the outer structure to address esthetic issues, such as pits or grooves in the surface, rough patches, or minor chips. We also reshape overly large teeth and dull sharp or portioned portions. If you have any questions about these cosmetic treatments, or if you would like to schedule a consultation to see if one is right for you, then contact our team today.
