Mouthwash Basics
Where did mouthwash come from? In 1879, surgical antiseptic was discovered by Drs. Joseph Lawrence and Jordan Lambert to make a great rinse for killing oral germs. Listerine was first mass marketed in the year 1914. Three basic types of mouthwash are generally available these days: antibacterial, fluoride infused, or a combination of the two. Fluoride lowers tooth decay risk by aiding in the remineralization of teeth, keeping tooth enamel strong, and making teeth slippery to bacteria.
Supplementing Oral Care
Brushing and flossing are the first step in removing nasty oral bacteria and plaque from your mouth. Mouthwash is a perfect punctuation at the end of your dental care routine to eradicate germs that your floss and toothbrush may have missed. Germs are not just dangerous for dental health, but they also cause foul breath. Stay away from mouthwash with a high alcohol content, however, as this can cause dry mouth and make halitosis issues even worse.
