Dental Hygiene: Pain And What’s Happening

When you find that you’re experiencing pain when you practice dental hygiene, you may wonder: Is dental pain normal? Is something wrong? Is it you or, perhaps, is something wrong with your smile that requires you to receive treatment? We invite you to get the introductory details with a quick quiz, so you feel like you’ve got a hold on how to respond.

Flossing Pain

Do you experience dental pain when you floss your smile? This (and all other aspects of dental hygiene) should not result in discomfort. Pain may the result of a heavy hand or it could be a problem with your oral health. Consider the following:

  • If you’re flossing very quickly or you press hard, you might be causing the discomfort. Ease up and remember that gentle care is always for the best!
  • If you’re flossing gently and you are experiencing pain, it could be gingivitis.
  • If you see symptoms like inflammation, redness, or otherwise and flossing is also painful, it’s probably gum disease.

Brushing Pain

Brushing should not hurt either. When this part of your dental hygiene hurts, it may also be either a sign of your own heavy-handed care or of a problem. Brush gently always and with a soft-bristled toothbrush. If you’re careful and you still deal with sensitivity or dental pain, call us. You may need treatment for gum disease, decay, erosion, or even something unrelated to hygiene (like bruxism).

What To Do?

You know the answer to this one! See if your own changes with a more delicate dental hygiene approach work. If they don’t (or if other symptoms are present), schedule your checkup today!
