When You Need a Calming Solution
When do we recommend this option for our patients? We could suggest this for people undergoing more complex and extensive treatments, such as dental implant placement, tooth extraction or jawbone grafting or sinus lifts. In addition, if you or a member of your family has special needs that makes undergoing even minor procedures a difficult process, this can be very beneficial. Likewise, we’ve found this can help people with serious dental anxiety receive the care they need to enjoy optimal oral health and a beautiful smile.
How We Choose the Right One for You
Our team will take several factors into account when we recommend a treatment option. First, we will look at your age, weight, and your overall medical and dental history. We also take into account the severity of your anxiety. If you have a fear of the dentist, let us know. We understand your anxiety is real, and we want to help you feel relaxed and enjoy a positive experience in our office. Everyone deserves a beautiful and healthy smile, and we want to make that possible.
Three Dental Sedation Options
Our team could choose one of three dental sedation options. The most common is nitrous oxide, which is helpful for all ages. You breathe in a gas through a mask over your nose, which provides instant calming. The effects wear off once the procedure ends, and people even drive themselves home or return to work or school. You’re also conscious, but will have little memory of the procedure.
Oral sedation is a more extensive level of calming, taken in a pill or liquid form prior to the procedure. You may need to avoid foods and drinks for eight hours before the procedure. You will be conscious, but again will have little memory of the procedure at all. The effects take time to wear off, so be sure and arrange for a ride home.
IV is the deepest form of sedation, and a trained anesthesiologist will be on hand to monitor you throughout the process. Again, you will need someone to bring you home afterward.
