Do Adults Really Need Dental Checkups?

The word “checkup” often makes us think about taking children to a doctor to monitor their health and growth. While it is incredibly important for the healthy development of little mouths that children visit the dentist every six months, it is just as important for adults. In today’s blog, your Conroe, TX, dentist will share the process involved in an adult checkup, and why these visits are important.

I Brush Every Day, Do I Really Need to See a Dentist?

No matter how good your oral hygiene habits are, there is always risk of a change in our oral health as we age. About half of all adults over 30 years old have gum disease, which can be fully reversed if caught by a dentist in its first form, gingivitis. Also, as our gums recede or old fillings or crowns shift, we become more susceptible to cavities, including decay in the roots of our teeth, which can lead to immense discomfort and even needing a tooth pulled. Often, by the time we notice discoloration, discomfort, sensitivity, or pain, it is too late to reverse the problem, and a more intense solution will be needed. However, at a dental exam, Dr. Richards is able to examine your smile for the first signs of cavities, gingivitis, and any other potential issues and address them before they get worse.

What Happens At My Visit?

When you come in for a six-month checkup, your visit will begin with a cleaning. A trained member of our dental team will use our professional tools to clean the hard, sticky plaque from your teeth that can’t be removed at home with a toothbrush and floss, immensely decreasing your risk for cavities. Then, Dr. Richards will provide a comprehensive examination of your smile using advanced technology such as intraoral cameras, digital x-rays, and 3D imaging. He will search your mouth for any signs of decay or disease, including oral cancer, ensuring that you leave our office with a better understanding of your oral health and the knowledge needed to maintain the health of your smile until your next appointment. If any potential issues are found, Dr. Richards will be able to consult with you to make a plan of action to prevent further problems. Of course, we understand that many adults may not have attended a dentist appointment in many years. At our office, you don’t need to feel embarrassed. We are always friendly and professional, and will address any issues with your oral health with kindness and care.
