Does this require immediate attention?
A tooth can be cracked, broken, or knocked out completely either by a biting down on something too hard or by a physical accident. A small chip may not need immediate care. If the crack is severe or if a large piece of the tooth is missing, it should be seen by a dentist immediately. If a tooth has been completely knocked out, it requires immediate attention. Severe pain can be less black and white to decide if you can wait or not. It is usually best to call your dentist if you are in doubt.
What do I do?
If a tooth is knocked out, try to keep it in the socket until you reach the dentist. You may some moistened gauze to apply pressure to keep the bleeding at bay. Be careful not to swallow the tooth. If you cannot keep it in the socket, rinse it and keep it in a container of your own saliva or milk until you can see your dentist. If you are in pain from any kind of emergency, an over-the-counter pain reliever may help.
