Try and Remain Calm
While “stay calm” may seem as though it goes against the urgency of the situation, on the contrary, it is actually an essential step. You see, an emergency can arise at any given time for any given person. What’s more? The severity of the situation can vary drastically, from something as minor as surface-level chip to a partially or completely dislodged tooth. Regardless of the severity, however, it is essential to remember to stay calm in these situations.
Although it may seem counterintuitive, staying calm is your best course of action, as it lets you act with a bit more efficiency when seeking emergency help. Of course, we are not simply saying to just calm down, but rather, helping yourself reach a calmer state will clear the mind and allow you to act with clarity.
Some exercises you can practice to remain calm in an emergency include breathing exercises, counting/pacing, and others. Additionally, it is very possible to go into shock in an emergency situation, so having a designated plan to follow in the event one does occur can help significantly. This takes us to our second tip, utilizing a contingency plan. For more information about this process, give our team a call today.
Utilize a Contingency Plan
An emergency can occur at any time, making it an unpredictable phenomenon. Though you cannot anticipate all emergencies, you can be prepared with a plan in the event one does occur. This is known as a contingency plan.
One important thing to plan for in a dental emergency is having a designated contact or person to transport you to and from our office. If you experience shock due to the situation, this individual can ensure you are safely transported to our office. Additionally, in the event you require anesthesia, someone is already present to take you home after your visit.
Gather Any Dislodged Structures
While waiting for your friend/contact to pick you up, take care to examine the area around you and ensure there aren’t any dislodged structures. If a tooth has been dislodged, make sure to locate it and take the necessary steps to bring it with you to your appointment, as restorative treatment may help.
