The Factors Behind Your Missing Teeth
Why do we lose our natural teeth? For some, a serious injury could knock them out or severely damage them, to the point that they need extraction. For others, tooth decay or infection that isn’t treated in a timely manner could cause them to become lost. The most common cause of course is gum disease, or more accurately, the advanced stage known as periodontitis. Your missing teeth can complicate how you eat and speak, and can lead to misalignment as the remaining teeth drift from position due to the gaps in the smile. You’re also more vulnerable to a variety of serious oral health concerns, from tooth decay and gum disease, to TMJ disorder and bruxism (teeth grinding). Which is why you need a dental bridge, even if you only have one missing tooth.
Creating A Dental Bridge
Each prosthetic we provide for our patients will be custom-made for their smiles. To get started, our team will gently numb the teeth on each side of the gap, which we refer to as abutment teeth. We then remove structure from them, and take detailed digital images of the teeth from multiple angles, combining them to create a precise and accurate 3D model. In a dental lab setting, we use the model to design and craft your bridge. The prosthetic will contain new teeth, or pontics, with crowns on each side. They’re made from porcelain to ensure we can shade them to blend with your smile. Porcelain is also very strong and can handle daily bite forces with ease!
Securing Your New Prosthetic
When your new prosthetic is ready, we will attach the crown to the abutment teeth with a powerful bonding agent. You now have a prosthetic that can last for 10 to 15 years on average, and can help you enjoy a functional and lifelike tooth replacement. If you have any questions about how we design and fabricate a dental bridge, or about ensuring they stay bright and last for years to come, then contact our team today to learn more.
