When Should I Seek Treatment?
A dental emergency means any injury or pain that isn’t life threatening. Issues that are life threatening mean you should call 911 right away or proceed directly to the nearest emergency room. But for other issues, we would love for you to call our office. Even if the issue occurs outside of normal business hours, we can call you back to schedule a time to see you soon and provide care. After all, damaged teeth could increase the risks of tooth decay and dental infection without attention! Common examples include chipped or cracked teeth, loose or missing crown and fillings, unexplained pain or objects caught between teeth, or teeth knocked loose or out completely.
How Do I Ease Discomfort?
You can take action once the injury occurs to limit discomfort until we can see you. This could include taking an over-the-counter pain medication. You can also rinse with warm water and use cloth or gauze to stem any bleeding. A cold compress or ice pack to the side of the face could reduce facial swelling too. If an object is caught between the teeth, only use floss to try and dislodge it to avoid injury to the gums. If a tooth is knocked out, be sure you pick it up by the crown only, never touch the root. You can rinse away dirt, but keep any tissues in place. Put it in a glass of salt water or milk and bring it to the office with you.
What Treatments Do You Offer?
For minor damage, such as a chipped tooth, we could often use dental bonding to repair the teeth in one visit. For more severe injury or fractures, we could use a custom-made and lifelike dental crown. Our team will explain the smile and create a treatment plan personalized for your smile to bring relief and preserve the health, function, and beauty of your smile.
If you have any questions about how we treat dental emergencies, then give us a call today. We would like to remind you and your children to please wear a mouthguard when playing full contact sports or martial arts to limit the risk of injury.
