Blemishes That Can be Addressed
In a number of cases, structural damage can be so great that significant restorative dentistry is needed to not only address the concern, but build up the strength of a structure so it may once again remain protected against other oral concerns. For some, however, damage incurred may be very minor, affecting your smile only by its appearance and not its function. For example, a minorly chipped tooth may not afford sensitivity or nerve damage, and instead may only cause your grin to appear slightly uneven. Another example consists of a cracked tooth that is not so severe it affects your sensitive roots and nerves, but only offers a small hairline discrepancy in the smoothness of a tooth. When these circumstances arise, your dentist may recommend the benefits of dental bonding to mend your smile.
What it Entails
Before beginning the process of having one or multiple teeth bonded and contoured, your dentist will carefully examine your grin to help determine if this process is the best course of action for you. Once that has been decided, your dentist will begin the process by applying a dental composite resin to the affected area. For cracks, the resin will be applied between the segments of a cracked tooth or around the fracture line. For chips, your dentist will apply the material at the chipped area. Once applied, we will begin carefully contouring, or shaping, the material to best mimic the natural texture of other teeth as well as reestablish symmetry. Once the area has been contoured to satisfaction, a special light will be used to harden the material, and you can be on your way.
