5 Reasons Your Gums Bleed

If you have ever wondered why your gums might bleed when you floss or brush your teeth, you are not alone. It happens to many people at different times in their lives, but that doesn’t necessarily make it normal. In today’s blog, your Conroe, TX, dentist will explain five main reasons that could be causing your gums to bleed.

Reason 1: You Just Started a New Flossing Routine

This one you might know from going to your regular checkups and cleanings, as many people end up bleeding a little as a result of not flossing regularly at home. When you start a new flossing routine, your gums are not yet used to the constant abrasion caused by the floss against them, so, while it shouldn’t be very painful, your gums may bleed a little until your routine becomes more regular. On that note, you should be flossing at least once a day, so you might as well start now if you haven’t already!

Reason 2: You Are Brushing or Flossing Too Hard

If you are using a toothbrush with firm bristles, or simply using a lot of pressure when you brush or floss your teeth, this could be causing your gums to bleed. Unlike with starting a new flossing routine, when bleeding is normal, if your gums continue to bleed when you floss, or if they bleed when you are brushing your teeth, you are being too harsh and can end up not only injuring your gums, but wearing down the enamel on the outside of your teeth, as well. Soft-bristled toothbrushes are best, and you don’t need to use a lot of pressure to get a deep clean.

Reason 3: You Take a Blood-Thinning Medication

If you are on blood thinners, your gums may bleed sometimes from slight pressure when brushing or flossing. This is not a problem, but you should take care to use a light hand when brushing and flossing so that you do not irritate your gums more than necessary.

Reason 4: You Are Pregnant

During pregnancy, many people experience what is called “pregnancy gingivitis,” which means that your gums may swell and become tender. This could cause some bleeding, and should be monitored by your dentist to make sure that your mouth is staying as healthy as possible, but it shouldn’t become a major issue as long as you are gentle while brushing and flossing.

Reason 5: You Have Gingivitis or Gum Disease

Gingivitis or any more advanced forms of gum disease often manifest partially by making your gums bleed. If you experience regular bleeding, even when using a soft-bristled toothbrush and when you have been flossing regularly for a while, you should visit your dentist to check on your oral health and ensure that any issues are not able to progress.
