A root canal is the quintessential scary dentist procedure mentioned in books, TV, and movies. At the Dental Centre of Conroe, we recognize how the media can alter people’s perception of dentistry, often for the worse. However, the reputation of the root canal is undeserved. In today’s blog, your Conroe, TX, dentist will answer your questions about root canal therapy, and clear up its scary reputation.
Questions and Answers
Question: Why would I need root canal therapy?
Answer: If you have been experiencing tooth pain due to an abscess (serious infection), or if your tooth is severely damaged or decaying, you may be a good candidate for repairing and saving your tooth through this treatment.
Question: What does the process entail?
Answer: A root canal involves your dentist removing the infected tissues from the inside of your affected tooth so that all decay and infection in the pulp can be thoroughly cleaned out of the empty space (including your root canals) inside your tooth. Then, your tooth will be filled with a composite filling and covered with a custom made CEREC crown.
Question: Is it painful?
Answer: Before the procedure, the area around your affected tooth will be numbed with local anesthetic, which means that you should barely feel the treatment, if at all, so it usually isn’t any more painful or uncomfortable than a regular dental filling. However, if you are extra worried about the procedure, or just nervous about dental procedures in general, we offer sedation dentistry options to help you feel more comfortable. After the procedure, while your tooth may feel sensitive for a few days, you should no longer have the intense pain of your infection.
Question: How long does it take?
Answer: Thanks to same day CEREC crown technology, we are able to complete the full treatment within just one visit- crown and all!
Question: How long will the filling and crown last?
Answer: With proper care, including flossing, thoroughly brushing twice a day, and attending appointments with the Dental Centre of Conroe every six months (or as recommended by Dr. Richards), your restored tooth can last forever.
Question: What will happen if I don’t get one?
Answer: If you need root canal therapy and choose not to receive it, or if you wait too long to talk with your dentist, you will be at a very high risk of serious infection. The infection within your tooth can spread to the tissues surrounding your tooth, which, in addition to causing terrible pain and swelling, can lead to you losing your tooth or even damaging your jaw.
