Is Dental Sedation Only For Major Surgery?

Dental sedation can help any time a patient is nervous about a dental procedure. While sedation is used in major oral surgery, dental sedation has a place in the comfortable treatment experience for other oral procedures. Each person’s anxiety level and tolerance for dental treatments will be different. If you are experience nervousness, or if you have been putting off discussing dental treatment out of fear, then dental sedation may be the right choice for you.

What Are The Types of Dental Sedation?

Oral Sedation: Oral sedation is delivered in the form of a prescription medication. You will take the sedative in advance of your procedure, so the sedative can travel into your system, alleviating anxiety and discomfort. With oral sedation, you will need to make arrangements for someone to drive you home.

Intravenous Sedation: Intravenous sedation is delivered directing into your bloodstream, in a carefully monitored dosage. You will be under constant supervision at all times, to make sure the IV sedation is adequate to the task, but never more than necessary. Although you will not be completely unconscious, most people do not remember much, if anything, about the time they are under IV sedation. If you are recieving IV sedation for a procedure, you will need to make arrangements for someone to drive you home.

Is Dental Sedation An Option for Everyone?

While most people tolerate sedation well, not everyone is a good candidate of sedation. At a consultation appointment, we will go over your health history in detail, including previous health issues, and current  medications. Some reasons we may recommend against a particular type of sedation (or any sedation at all) would include: pregnancy, patients who are very young or very old, and patients with underlying medical issues such as certain heart conditions.
