What to Expect from Implant Supported Dentures

implant supported denturesDentures are available in many forms, from partial to full, stabilized by implants, or traditional suction-held prosthesis. However, the world of implant supported dentures is steadily growing due to the unwavering demand for a stronger, more useful restoration. Implants placed in your jaw can be used to snap your denture in place, and prevent sliding or gum abrasions; also, you may also find that the security of implants allows you to eat a wider a variety of foods, which can benefit your overall health.

The Process

During your initial consultation, your dentist will thoroughly examine your oral cavity and take X-rays to create an accurate model of your anatomy. This will allow for correct placement of implants based on the density of your jaw bone and the location of nerves and sinus cavities. Your first surgery will be when the implants are inserted into your bone. You will be sufficiently anesthetized during the procedure, but some patients opt for added sedation to calm their nerves. After surgery, you will undergo a healing time of 3-6 months to allow for the fusion of bone and metal. Once healed, you may return for a second surgery to uncover the tops of the implants and have a “healing cap” placed, which will remain for 10-14 days. After this time, the caps will be removed and permanent abutments will take their place. These are what your new, custom dentures will attach to, and create an impressively stable restoration.

Who is a Candidate

Anyone seeking a type of dental implant must be prepared for the surgical process. You must have adequate bone tissue, or agree to a bone graft if required. In general, if you are healthy enough for bridge work or tooth extractions, you should tolerate implants just fine. There are few, rare, medical conditions that would contraindicate the implant process.
