No one likes to have to deal with a tender and troubled tooth. When tooth pain flares up, it is generally OK to give it a few days, to see if things subside. There are transient conditions (such as changes in airline cabin pressure when flying) that can cause a temporary toothache due to sinus pressure. On the other hand, if your tooth aches for more than a few days, or pain onset is sudden, call your knowledgeable dentist for an appointment. Your tooth may be trying to tell you something.
Tooth Pain Might Say “You Have Head Cold”
The teeth roots and nerves of upper teeth are positioned near the sinus cavities, and can be affected by swelling and pressure within the sinus cavity. Back teeth can be affected by pressure in the ears, especially pain on the same side as an ear that feels blocked or congested. Pay special attention as colds and sinus infections clear up, to make sure the tooth pain also goes away.
Tooth Pain Might Say “It’s Really Cold Outside”
Sensitive teeth can happen to anyone, but are more common, perhaps surprisingly, in younger adults and women. Some other factors affecting tooth sensitivity are gum recession (exposing more of the teeth roots) and a diet high in acidic foods, such as citric fruits, tomatoes and wine. Many people find relief with toothpastes made for sensitive teeth. They are formulated to help strengthen tooth enamel, filling in microscopic holes that lead to tooth sensitivity.
Tooth Pain Might Say “Something Is Wrong Here”
Tooth discomfort may be your body’s way of signaling that something is wrong. The outer layer of the tooth does not have nerve endings, so tooth pain may signal that protective layer is breached by an opening (such as a tooth fracture or cavity.) If infection is encroaching on the inner layer, such as the pulp, pain can be felt.
