Can Molecular Manipulation Stop Severe Gum Disease?

ResearchersPeriodontitis is the clinical term for severe gum disease which affects almost 50% of the adult population in America. This gum tissue inflammation, combined with periodontal pockets, can lead to tooth and jawbone density loss. There are many studies that point to periodontitis having a systemic impact on overall health, as well. Conroe dentist, Dr. John M. Richards explains a study focused on halting the development of periodontitis even after it has already begun.

Gingival Inflammation

Research data was published in the Journal of Immunology. The scientists were led by a postdoctoral researcher – Toshiharu Abe – from the Department of Microbiology in Penn’s School of Dental Medicine. Along with senior author, professor George Hajishengallis (who is the supervisor of Abe in the university lab) the findings were compiled and written by an impressive group of senior authors. All of the researchers were involved with prior complex research on the bacteria responsible for severe periodontal disease (periodontitis). The germs which cause periodontitis have been compared to “hijackers” of white blood cell receptors. Triggering an inflammation in the immune system, this response leads to periodontitis.

Stopping Periodontitis at the Source

Abe’s experiment focused on the receptors with the help of rodent models.  Mice were injected with different types of molecules. The molecular structures were activated via various receptors, proving that periodontitis could potentially be stopped (something not currently possible). Two particular molecules were activated to the result of causing gum disease inflammation. This method of crosstalk between molecules leads scientists to a theory that by blocking one of these receptors, gum tissue inflammation can be stopped altogether.
