FAQ’s about Sedation Dentistry

Relaxed Man in Green GrassSedation dentistry can be a great way to receive the care you need if you suffer from dental anxiety or dental phobia. We offer two types of sedation: oral sedation and IV sedation. Oral sedation uses prescription sedatives, such as Valium or Halcion, to help you relax. IV sedation uses more powerful medications, administered directly into your blood stream. If you suffer from dental anxiety, please let us know at your first appointment. We will explain both options and help you choose the type of sedation most suited to your needs.

Am I the only person who suffers from dental anxiety?

If you suffer from dental anxiety or dental phobia, there is no reason to feel embarrassed. You are not alone. Statistics show that between 9% and 20% of the population struggle with this condition. It can affect men and women of all ages and states of dental health. We understand the effects that this anxiety can have on your life, and we provide compassionate, gentle treatment.

What is the difference between oral and IV sedation?

If you choose, oral sedation, we will prescribe anti-anxiety medications. You will take this prescription prior to your treatment. The amount you take will depend on the level of your anxiety. IV sedation will induce a twilight sleep. In this state, you will be conscious and able to answer questions. However, you will not really be aware of what is going on, and you will remember little, if anything, when you “wake up.”

How do I know which option is right for me?

In general, oral sedation may be the optimal choice if you suffer from moderate dental sensitivity or if you have a fear of needles. Because IV sedation induces a deeper state of relaxation, it may be the right choice if you have severe dental anxiety. Of course, the only way to know for sure which sedation option is right for you is to schedule a complete consultation.

Is sedation dentistry safe?

Absolutely. When you use oral sedatives according to our instructions, they are very low-risk. However, because it will take a while for these medications to leave your system, you will need to find a ride to and from the office. IV sedation also poses very few risks. We can adjust the levels of medication during your treatment to keep you safe and comfortable.
