FAQs About Tooth Decay

tooth decayEveryone knows that bad oral hygiene will lead to tooth decay; but do you know why it happens? Many people do not understand how and why cavities form, and may be more at risk of developing them for this reason. The tooth decay process has multiple steps and several controllable factors involved. By making good dental health choices based on facts, you will be more capable of preventing cavities and other oral hygiene issues in the future.

Does food cause decay?

Certain food and drink items that you consume can contribute greatly to the formation of cavities. Products that contain sugar and starch are your worst enemies when it comes to preventing tooth decay because bacteria in your mouth consume sugar particles that remain after you eat, and produce a harmful acid during their metabolization. The acid can eat away at your tooth enamel, causing a cavity.

What if I can’t brush after I eat?

Although brushing your teeth is your best defense against decay, sometimes it may be difficult or impossible to accomplish after every meal. In these instances, rinsing your mouth with water can help to remove some leftover particles and bacteria that otherwise could contribute to cavity formation. Also, dentists recommend the use of sugar-free gum with xylitol as an excellent method of cavity prevention after meals. The sugar substitute is impossible for bacteria to break down; therefore, less harmful acid production can take place. By chewing gum you increase your saliva output, which also helps to rinse away bacteria and replenish nutrients to your teeth.

I have a cavity, now what?

Cavities are frequently diagnosed and treated during regular preventive dental care visits. Your dentist may find a cavity upon examination of your mouth, or by looking at your X-rays. Typically, treatment is minor and you may require a dental filling after the cavity has been cleaned out. Although common, cavities are extremely preventable with proper oral hygiene techniques.
