For children, losing a tooth is just a part of growing up, and is nothing to be concerned about as it means their adult, permanent teeth are coming in. Unfortunately, if you lose a tooth as an adult, another tooth will not grow to take its place, and you are experiencing a dental emergency. In today’s blog, your Conroe, TX, dentist will share the ways in which we are able to replace a missing tooth when you have a dental emergency.
First Steps
When you find yourself in the midst of a dental emergency, including losing a tooth, it is important to stay as calm as possible. The first two things you should to are take care of yourself, which likely comes in the form of stopping any bleeding, and save your tooth, without removing any tissues attached to it, in a sealed container, submerged in salt water or milk if possible. That way, if your tooth is able to be reattached, it will be preserved. Then, call and schedule an emergency appointment with Dr. Richards at the Dental Centre of Conroe.
In Our Office
When you arrive for your emergency appointment, Dr. Richards will examine your mouth to determine the cause of your tooth loss. If your tooth was knocked out during an impact, he will make sure that other parts of your mouth were not affected. If your tooth became loose and fell out, it may have been due to tooth decay, gum disease, or another underlying issue. From there, Dr. Richards may try to reattach your natural tooth if it is healthy. If this does not work, he will work with you to determine the best solution to restore your missing tooth.
Options for Tooth Restoration
When you lose a tooth, there are several good options available to you for lifelike tooth replacement, including:
- Dentures, which are a great option if you have lost most of your teeth, and can be achieved through the traditional oral appliance or with dental implants
- A dental bridge, which uses the stronger teeth around the gap to support a tooth restoration
- A dental implant with a crown on top, which replaces your tooth starting with the roots and is finished with a dental crown to fully replace your tooth.
Any of these options can beautifully restore your smile, and Dr. Richards will be happy to discuss which might be best for you.
