5 Surprising Ways to Prevent Cavities

Prevent CavitiesYou know the best ways to prevent cavities. Brush at least twice a day, floss at least once, and visit the dentist every six months or more. However, it turns out that there is a lot more you could be doing to protect your healthy smile. Cavities are the result of two things: bacteria and sugars. Bacteria work with sugars to form acids, which will begin to erode your dental enamel. As the acids wear through your tooth, they will create cavities. By cutting back on the harmful cavity-causing substances, you can significantly reduce your risk of decay.

1. Cut Back on Citrus to Prevent Decay.

Citrus fruits are very high in acid. Because the fruits contain fiber and so many essential vitamins, we would never advocate eliminating them from your diet entirely. However, be wise about your citrus consumption. Alternate oranges and tangerines with apples and pears. These water-based fruits also have a crunchy texture that can help to remove bacteria, plaque, and tartar from your teeth. When you do eat citrus, try to incorporate them with a larger meal, and drink plenty of water at the same time.

2. Wait before Brushing.

Whether you are eating citrus or some other food, you should wait about half an hour before brushing your teeth. If you brush immediately after eating, you will rub acid and food particles into your dental enamel. This will expose the layer of dentin, which is far more susceptible to decay and discoloration.

3. Drink from the Sink.

Tap water contains fluoride, an important mineral that helps strengthen enamel and prevent cavities. Unfortunately, many bottled waters do not contain fluoride. Check the label on your water to make sure it contains this important mineral. Additionally, if you use a home filter, you may be removing fluoride from your tap water. The American Dental Academy® provides a list of safe filters that will not strip fluoride from your water.

4. Sip with a Straw to Prevent Cavities.

Water is always best for your teeth, but when you drink other beverages, it is helpful to use a straw. This will keep sugar and acid from coming in direct contact with your teeth. In addition to preventing decay, when you use a straw, it can cut back on tooth discoloration.

5. Chew Gum.

Sugared gum is notoriously bad for your dental health, but sugar free gum can actually have enormous benefits. First of all, the act of chewing stimulates saliva production and helps to remove food and acid from your smile. Second, when you choose a gum sweetened with xylitol, it can have added benefits. Xylitol can reduce the growth of bacteria by up to 90%. It can also prevent the remaining bacteria from adhering to your teeth.
